Charity, Employment and Public Law

Khalid Sofi is Managing Partner of the firm. He specialises in charity, employment and public law. He deals with both contentious and non-contentious matters and handles litigation in Employment Tribunals, Employment Appeals Tribunal, Charity Tribunal, the High Court, Court of Appeal and the European Court of Human Rights.

He co-ordinates the firm’s Charity Team and has several years' experience advising charities on a range of issues from the initial set up and registration process through to specific issues of governance, risk management and employment. He advises groups with a range of charitable purposes including education, environment and health.

He has developed a particular expertise in the Muslim sector and is thus a point of reference for many Muslim organisations, both nationally and internationally.  He is also a member of the Charity Law Association and the Employment Lawyers Association.

He brings a wealth of human rights and equality law knowledge to his work and has been involved in several high profile discrimination and public law cases.

He actively furthers his work in the community and focuses on human rights and equality issues. He is the current chair of the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) Legal Affairs Committee and is a founding chairman of Muslim Agency for Development and Enterprise (MADE).

Recent work:-

  • Advising and assisting a UK-based aid organisation to set up and register the charity as an International NGO in Malawi.

  • Advising a National Association on amending the Constitution and assisting in the setting up of a charitable arm to provide services to its members.

  • Acted for a charitable company (which manages a large mosque) in a dispute where a former trustee of an Unincorporated Association refused to assign the benefit of a building agreement to the charitable company. The case went all the way to the High Court and after a twelve day hearing, it was ruled that the charitable company were to continue to manage the mosque, be given the benefit of the Building Agreement and have land transferred to them from the Council.
  • Acted for an employee of a large public services organisation on an Unfair Dismissal claim.  The employee was awarded the maximum amount of compensation allowed under the current employment legislation.
  • Advising and assisting campaigners to set up not-for-profit organisation to support the ongoing struggle in Syria.
